This is a question for all members of this forum. Do you think there should be additional forum subjects in addition to the existing Beginners, Advance and Grow and Show topics?

Keep in mind the aim of this forum is to focus on factual and education discussions of bonsai. πŸ™‚

I think we should have an area devoted to other aspects of bonsai, particularly

      Rocks & Stones
      Styles & Styling
      Soils and Potting Media
      Pots (both Training and Display)
      Tools, Sealants and Accessories.

They are as much part of bonsai as the trees themselves, and are largely misunderstood or misused by beginners (and a lot of old hands).

A general forum subject would be good also Brenden if possible(coffee lounge), just to keep the topics either unrelated to bonsai or just general questions also unrelated to bonsai.

      Thanks for the suggestion Peter!

I will leave this one to the boss to say Ya or Nay as the original purpose of this forum was to avoid the chit chat and stay focused on Bonsai, but I must admit I’ve thought we need this sort of forum to prevent such posts being made in the main areas.

      Other ideas:

      – Care and Maintenance
      – Pest and Disease

Just a thought… would we consider a Species Guide section?

I have posted a few comprehensive replies to questions on certain species. I know that we have a lot of knowledge about how and when and why to do certain things with some species, that we could share with people.

      Is it reasonable?

What about a forum on seasons Eg what to concentrate on in Summer, autumn, sping & winter

That’s a good idea, Darrin. A monthly calendar is too imprecise, as Australia’s seasonal variability at one end of the country versus the other is fairly dramatic.

As for species specific areas i would say only Conifer and non conifer.
The only other one i can think of that would prove very informative, and provide a good database for articles.

      species specific topics make sense
      especially for cataloguing purposes

There are peculiarities, for instance, in dealing with Bougainvilleas as opposed to Azaleas, as opposed to Maples, Peter.

I think it has to be a bit narrower in focus than just conifer and non-conifer.

Likewise, there are growth habits relevant to Pines that set them apart from Junipers, Cedars, Larches, and so on.

What about natives and exotics as a separation to the species? Care for exotics can be vastly different to anything native.

How about we start a few threads and let them settle where they may? They can always be reassigned to separate categories if the section needs to be split, I assume?

      Hi folks,

We could shift the species guide out of the forums and build it into a Wiki that can be edited by selected members? A forum could be created where all members can suggest a change or comment, and someone with permission could modify the wiki turning it into a Bonsaipedia.

That’s a better idea. Threads are easily buried in a forum. Info in a wiki is much more easily accessible.
